How It Works:
Saccharomyces Ferment is a yeast enzyme that uses ammonia (what makes sweat stink) to make amino acids. We can’t smell amino acids but fungi (i.e. yeast) can use them to grow. To keep fungi from growing under the arm, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate are preservatives that inhibit bacterial growth but don’t alter the enzyme function. This is a water based formula and therefore requires a mild, food grade preservative.
Under normal conditions the body excretes ammonia in the form of urea (an organic compound with no odor) in our sweat. However, when we work out we produce a lot of ammonia and it’s hard for the body to convert all of this to urea and some of it comes out as ammonia. Moreover, in places like our armpits, bacteria that need organic compounds to survive can break urea back down into ammonia. Ammonia is what makes sweat stink. So how does this deodorant rectify that? Weirdly enough… yeast emzymes!
Saccharomyces Ferment is a bacterial enzyme from a type of yeast known as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. All yeast have enzymes that metabolize nitrogen to make amino acids which keep the yeast alive and growing. Most enzymes use nitrogen from organic compounds such as sugar and urea. This specific type of yeast enzyme in this deodorant can utilize the inorganic compound ammonia (NH3) for its major source of nitrogen. The enzyme can take what makes our sweat smelly and use it to make amino acids, that’s great! But wait, now there’s a perfect environment for yeast to grow under your arm. Now what?
Solution! Potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate are both food grade preservatives that inhibit the growth of yeast however, not the function. So essentially it lets the enzymes do their job, keeps the amino acids from forming yeast, and the bacteria in the underarm area at a minimum.
Magnesium chloride (a natural salt) because some studies suggest that a magnesium deficiency can encourage body odor. Some tingling may occur briefly for some users due to the magnesium chloride in this product. This is often felt after freshly shaving. This tingling should only last a few seconds. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician.
This is a deodorant, not an anti-perspirant.
Use on clean, dry, healthy skin.
